Beauty on a budget: London’s best facials

Woman, you look tired!

Woman, you look tired!

Sometimes I just don’t want to look as crap as I feel. And, oh Lord, do I feel crap at times. Sleep deprivation, a poor diet and just a little bit too much sun worshipping in my early twenties have taken its toll on the skin I am in. Time to show this face some TLC.

But where to turn to? Before being a responsible parent (don’t laugh at me!), I had all the time and funds to travel around London and test salon after salon. An expensive hobby, but at least I know where to go to now. Or where not to. Hint: avoid big brand names. Their products may be delish, but the service is often far from superior.

Because it’s Friday and I am feeling generous, and I don’t want you to spend all your pocket money for trial and error, let me share my two top tips with you:

If you feel rather rich, are in need for an overhaul before a special event (I went there before my wedding) or are looking for something to put on your birthday wishlist, I suggest you pay Rani Mirza a visit. Her Red Carpet Treatment leaves your skin glowing, youthfully plump and makes you feel a million dollars, no doubt. But the 2-hour long treatment at £170 would certainly break my bank at the moment.

However, you don’t need to crash your daughter’s Child Trust Fund to get rid of a few blackheads. Yesterday I felt very brave and gave myself into the hands of Amy, beautician at Dermacia Beauty Salon & Pharmacy. Admittedly, the salon on Upper Street in Islington is not quite as glamorous as Rani’s venue on Beauchamp Place in Knightsbridge. But after an hour of exfoliation, steam, extractions and the most heavenly face massage I ever experienced, I left £45 that helped a lot towards feeling like a million bucks.

I’d give anything for a spa day right now. Thanks for the recommendations – I never know where to go. Always used to go to Bliss Spa (when I could get in that is).

  2. Simone

I was only asking some friends yesterday for a recommendation for a good facial….I haven’t had one for ages and really am feeling in need!

Upper Street is not far from me at all, I think I may give them a call…..thanks for the recommendation!

    Happy Friday :)

You’re beautiful without facials woman! You are suffering from baby body, soon it will be gone.
However, but next time I visit Upper Street you’re babysitting…

Facials are essential, and I’m glad you have time for one for yourself, it did take me a while to find the right person here and I did have a few itchy episodes at the hands of rather rough hands – but all well now. £45 really is fantastic value, and the effects will last for a while. xxxx

Same here, I think i should go to facial center and give myself a treat. Thanks for the suggestions!

Oh that sounds just about perfect on a friday afternoon!

Only had my first facial a few weeks ago… um, hello! I was so missing out (but at least saving money…). good to know there is a place i can go without blowing the bank!

  7. Victoria

Sounds perfect, and just around the corner from you too. How lovely. Its a while since I had a facial – the last was at an Aveda salon and it was ok but nothing to rave about.

  8. Rosie Scribble

Wow. Those places sound fabulous. I think we all need pampering once in a while. Although they sound reasonably expensive, I reckon it’s money well spent. *dashes off to the find Yellow Pages*

I had a facial last weekend and it was only afterwards that I realised how crappy my skin had been looking. TLC needed indeed – that, and less wine probably!

Ooo- I love a good facial….you’ve reminded me that I haven’t had one for two and a half years ( just before the baby was born) that’s why I look so rough then LOL! ;0) And you look far from tired or in need of a facial! ;0)

The place on Upper St looks fab – what great value for money!

In the old days I used to go to the Cowshed Spa at Shoreditch House as we got a hefty discount with our membership. I do miss my spa trips, I think facials will have to be introduced as an important part of pregnancy relaxation ;)

Sounds good. I had one the other day and although it turned out to be a fairly shabby salon the woman doing it was brilliant and my skin is still glowing! Just goes to show the posh ones aren’t always best. Having said that I did have a fantastic one at Elemis last yaer.

LUSH post, thank you – I love dreaming about all the things I will do in London One Day and the Islington facial sounds brill – and not too expensive. Really want to get the Bliss Pore-fector – but only if it really works, far too expensive otherwise xxxx

I’d love to have a facial and in the grand scheme of things that is really good value, especially if you feel great afterwards.

    Love the shirt btw.

You cannot beat a good facial… and God Damn it, it’s been nearly a year since I had one so I need to get my arse in gear and book in! Meanwhile, I’ve tagged your (very youthful) face over at mine! xx

i need a facial. But everywhere around here just does facials that involve putting a lot of products on your face and taking them off again. No steaming or extracting. In fact haven’t found one of those since I left the US. I guess Islington it is then.

You are absolutely beautiful. And btw, hold on to that shirt — it’s very big now. Very.

With your “refreshed” face and that shirt I predict your life will be very exciting and fulfilling in all ways.

The last time I had a treatment was when my second child was born. 4 years ago! It doesn’t feel like a priority for me, although I would love to receive it as a gift.
But you look great even tired, don’t worry.:)

I’m in! And need to find some glow. Can I also recommend Dove Spas? There are a few on the High Street and you can also find them in Virgin Active gyms (you don’t need to be a member). Really thorough facials, free skin diagnostic computer thing, and great value.

yh…. i go to the islington Dermacia pharmacy beauty clinic, the staff is very friendly and the product there using is great, you will see the result instanly after on facial treatment. a place to keep your skin looking good and healthy. =)

  21. Happy client

I went to Dermacia on Upper Street,Islington the other day and was thoroughly spoilt! The facial (including extraction) was just what my face needed – smooth, vibrant looking skin again! And the back massage is definitely recommended. I normally avoid writing reviews but If you haven’t been, you are seriously missing out!

  22. Kathi

Thank you so much for recommending the Dermacia Salon on Upper Street! When I first got there I was a bit unsure ( it looks a bit sketchy) but its lovely downstairs and the facial was amazing! Very happy! Thanks!
